As we step into 2026, there’s something powerful about pausing to look back before charging ahead. This is the first part of a three-part series on personal planning designed specifically for us Gen Z folks navigating a fast-paced world. Over the next three days, we’ll explore how to reflect on the past year, set meaningful goals while putting yourself first, and ultimately build a plan to truly win in life. If you’re tired of New Year’s resolutions that fizzle out by February, stick with me, these steps come from real experiences, trial and error, and the kind of growth that only comes from living through the chaos of our twenties.
Understanding the Importance of Reflection
Reflection isn’t just journaling for the sake of it; it’s the foundation of real progress. I remember at the end of 2024, sitting down with a coffee and my phone notes, feeling overwhelmed by everything that had happened. The year had been a mix of highs like landing that freelance gig or finally traveling solo and lows, like burnout from endless scrolling or strained friendships. But when I actually took the time to reflect, patterns emerged that changed how I approached the next year.
Start with the basics: What went well in 2025? Think about moments that made you proud. Maybe you stuck to a fitness routine longer than ever, or you saved up for something meaningful. Celebrate those wins without downplaying them. For me, it was realizing I had built better boundaries with social media after a rough patch of comparison anxiety. Write them down, specifics matter. Instead of “I was happier,” note “I felt more confident after completing that online course in digital design.”
Then, honestly face what didn’t go well. This part can sting, but it’s where the gold is. What drained your energy? Perhaps endless late-night Doomscrolling stole your sleep, or saying yes to everything left you exhausted. I once spent months in a job that paid okay but crushed my creativity, reflecting on that taught me to value fulfillment over just stability. Ask yourself: What habits held me back? What relationships felt one-sided? Be kind to yourself here; this isn’t about self-criticism, it’s about clarity.
The most important questions Gen Z often has during reflection are things like “Was I too hard on myself?” or “Did I waste the year?” The answer is almost always “no..”, you grew, even if it didn’t feel like it. Look for lessons in the challenges. That failed side hustle? It taught resilience. The heartbreak? It showed what you truly value in connections. One lesson that hit me hard in 2025 was learning to forgive myself for not having it all figured out at 25. We’re in an era where social media shows everyone’s “perfect” life, but real growth comes from embracing the messy parts.
Finally, identify 3-5 key lessons to carry forward. Mine last year were: Prioritize rest to avoid burnout, invest in real-life connections over online ones, and chase passions even if they’re not “practical.” These become your compass for 2026.
Reflection sets the stage for everything else.. without it, goals feel random. Tomorrow, in Part 2, we’ll dive into how to turn these insights into actionable goals and why putting yourself first isn’t selfish, it’s essential. See you then for the next step in making 2026 your year. 🫶🏻
