Sri Lanka has revealed its player lineup for the forthcoming two-match ODI series against Australia, retaining most of the team that toured New Zealand earlier this year. The matches, scheduled to take place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, will see a minor adjustment in the squad’s composition, with seam-bowling allrounder Chamindu Wickramasinghe being the sole player excluded from the previous series. The team has been slightly reduced, featuring 16 players compared to the 17 that participated in New Zealand.
The upcoming series holds little significance for Sri Lanka following their failure to qualify for the Champions Trophy, but it remains crucial for Australia, who will proceed to Pakistan for the multi-team tournament immediately afterward. Despite the lack of stakes, the Sri Lankan team appears robust, particularly at the familiar venue in Colombo.
The series is set to kick off with the first ODI on February 12th and will conclude with the second match on February 14th, both games starting at 9:30 AM local time.
The squad showcases a strong batting lineup led by captain Charith Asalanka, with Kusal Mendis, who recently excelled in the test series against Australia, expected to continue his form. Concerns might linger around Pathum Nissanka’s performance, but the team remains confident with solid backups like Nishan Madushka, Nuwanidu Fernando, and Avishka Fernando.
On the bowling front, Sri Lanka prides itself on a diverse group of spinners including Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, and Jeffrey Vandersay, supported by fast bowlers Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Eshan Malinga, and Mohamed Shiraz.
