In a historic moment for the Indian Premier League (IPL), Vaibhav Suryavanshi, just 14 years and 23 days old, became the youngest debutant in IPL history. Making his debut as an Impact Player for Rajasthan Royals (RR), the teenage prodigy stunned fans by hitting a six off the very first ball he faced, delivered by seasoned Indian pacer Shardul Thakur.
A Fearless Debut Against LSG in Jaipur
Suryavanshi’s fearless approach shone as RR chased 181 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Jaipur. Opening the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Samastipur-born cricketer showcased maturity beyond his years, smashing 34 runs off 20 balls, including two sixes and four boundaries.
His explosive entry began with a powerful loft over extra cover, immediately making headlines. He continued to dominate the powerplay, dispatching India international Avesh Khan for another massive six and surviving an early scare when a catch was dropped by Prince Yadav.
Rising Star From Samastipur
Born in Samastipur, Bihar—about 100 km northeast of Patna—Vaibhav Suryavanshi had already made headlines with a first-class debut at just 13 and a 58-ball century for India in a youth Test against Australia last September. Recognizing his immense potential, Rajasthan Royals secured him for INR 1.1 crore at the IPL 2024 Mega Auction.
Though he remained on the bench for the first half of IPL 2025, an injury to captain Sanju Samson opened the door for Suryavanshi’s debut—and he didn’t disappoint.
Cricket Legends React to Suryavanshi’s Debut
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu shared his excitement on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut, saying, “Playing IPL at 14 is unimaginable.” Meanwhile, RR coach Mark Boucher remarked, “He must be a special cricketer to be selected at this age.”
Rayudu also drew parallels with Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut at 16, stating, “Everyone in India is watching him closely, expecting great things.”
A Glimpse of Future Stardom
As LSG introduced spinners to slow down RR’s aggressive start, Suryavanshi adapted his approach smartly. He punished short deliveries and timed his shots brilliantly against bowlers like Digvesh Rathi and Ravi Bishnoi.
His impressive knock came to an end at 34, when Aiden Markram beat him in flight and Rishabh Pant completed a sharp stumping. Despite his dismissal, his 85-run opening stand with Jaiswal in just 8.4 overs had already put RR in a strong position.
Unfortunately, a late collapse led to Rajasthan Royals’ fourth consecutive defeat, but the highlight remained Suryavanshi’s incredible debut.
